MOSQUITO BITES! NOT FOR ME, NOT FOR MY FAMILY!!
Today, NAVRC joins the world in marking World Malaria day with the theme: “Harness Innovation To Reduce The Malaria Disease Burden and Save Lives.”
Despite the steady interventions aimed at containing the surge of Malaria and lowering the global burden of the disease; Malaria has continued to have devastating impact on the health of the people around the world as new cases of malaria and Malaria related deaths are still being recorded daily, especially, in Sub-Saharan African and other countries where the disease is still endemic. This years focus therefore; is on the need for New Vector Control Approaches, with a closer look on, new Innovations and Diagnostic approaches that will help speed-up the pace of progress against this killer disease; calling on concerted efforts in order to achieve this.
Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease that can be transmitted to humans and other hosts through bites from infected Anopheles species. According to World Malaria Report 2021, Nigeria accounted for 26.8% and 31.9% of global cases and deaths respectively. That’s quite significant percentages. As the world continue to highlight need for new Innovation and Diagnostic tools in Malaria control; prevention remains key in containing this deadly scourge of malaria, the transmission and consequent adversities, as Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease. Environmental sanitation, proper waste disposal and sleeping under Insecticidal Treated Nets (ITNs) remain basics in containing this deadly scourge.
